When you visit the Strait of Magellan Park, expect sudden weather changes. Extreme wind gusts are common at the Santa Ana Peninsula. Packing the right clothing makes your 45 to 60-minute trail walks much more comfortable.
Why do I need a windproof jacket?
Patagonia winds are famously strong, especially at the edge of the peninsula.
A windproof and waterproof jacket is your most important piece of gear. Sudden and intense wind gusts hit the Fuerte Bulnes perimeter often. This outer shell protects you from unexpected rain and wind chill.
How should I layer my clothes for the Strait of Magellan?
Wear a warm fleece or thermal mid-layer under your jacket.
Temperatures fluctuate rapidly as you walk the park's 250 hectares. A light daypack allows you to carry layers as the weather changes. Remove your mid-layer if the sun comes out, and put it back on when the coastal wind picks up.

What kind of shoes should I wear in Patagonia?
Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots.
The paths around the historical reconstructions and the Coastal Trail are unpaved. You need good traction to navigate the rugged shoreline safely. The Coastal Trail takes about 45 to 60 minutes to complete.
What accessories are necessary for Fuerte Bulnes?
You need a warm hat to protect your ears from wind, plus sunscreen and sunglasses.
The glare off the water at the Strait of Magellan can be intense. Secure loose items like hats and sunglasses before the wind catches them.

What else should I bring to the park?
Bring extra battery power, a reusable water bottle, and a bank card.
Cold weather drains camera and smartphone batteries fast. Bring a power bank if you plan to take photos at the Hito Mitad de Chile monument. Also, pack a credit or debit card to pay the roughly 20,000–22,000 CLP foreign adult entrance fee. Cash is sometimes not accepted at the gate.
How strong is the wind at Fuerte Bulnes?
Wind gusts on the Santa Ana Peninsula are sudden and intense.
Always secure loose items before walking near the cliffs. The winds are strongest along the perimeter of the 1843 fort. The visitor center offers an indoor refuge if the gusts become too severe.

Questions travellers ask
Do I need hiking boots for Fuerte Bulnes?
Sturdy walking shoes are usually sufficient. However, hiking boots provide better ankle support on the unpaved forest and coastal trails.
Can I buy food at the park?
Yes. Café del Estrecho is located on-site. It offers warm drinks, local pastries, and snacks. It is a good place to warm up after your walk.
Is it cold at the Strait of Magellan Park year-round?
The weather is generally cool to cold. The best time to visit is from October to April for milder weather. Even in summer, you must pack warm layers.
